hanneke giezen

a colleague-student showed me the website of hanneke giezen a while ago. she said that her work reminded her of my work. that was a compliment to me ! i never saw the work of this visual artist before and i was overwhelmed by the profusion. wich is positive, because it leaves a mark.

when i was reading the text on her ceramic art i noticed that we have our vision on beauty and ugliness in common. she knows that people think her work is ugly or repulsive in some way, but she wants to make it because she is convinced of the beauty of it !

at the same yardsale i found a statue that still takes my breath away. the shape of the wings and the colours of the glaze make me want to put it underneath a glass bell in the middle of the livingroom. despite it’s quite small it radiates prestige. the woman that sold it said she would not call it kitsch, because it’s from a great designer from holland. maybe you can call it Kitsch with the large K?

was at a yardsale yesterday, bought some amazing jewels there!

this necklace and brooches remind me of the jewelry i played with when i was about 10 years old. my grandmother had this kind of ‘iridescent pearled’ necklace and ‘iridescent stoned’ brooches. i could stare at them for houres. she lost them, too bad. but i found their look-a-likes ! happy happy !

the woman i bought this one from, said she wore it when she was young in the early sixties. love it because of it’s naive way of ‘pretending to be something’. it seems like the maker wanted to take a piece out of the sea and put it on a necklace. the blue, the glitters, the pearls in the ‘water’. it’s small, but because of its materials and shape it becomes cosmological. i <3 it.

this woman also had some nice animal-brooches. the funny thing about this kind of jewels is the use of the gemstone. it always has to fill the eyes. it gives the figures something very artificial and soulless, demon-like. wich probably wasn’t what the makers had in mind while making a cute dog and an elegant cat.

the melted plastic i talked about earlier inspired me to make jewelry that calls on my ‘nostalgia-feeling’ of mermaid-toys. the waving surface and streched holes remind me of the sea and its plants and reefs. i used the most common typology, like necklaces and bracelets. i also made a crown that for example could be worn by a little girl dressing up like a mermaidqueen.

when i was a little girl i spent alot of time with my grandparents. my grandma had and still has little statues and objects i will never forget because i spent too much time cleaning them for her. i treated them like treasures. i don’t know exactly why, but i think they are one of the reasons why i love old stuff.

where does my interest for kitsch come from? i think that every little girl goes trough a period where she adores everything that is pink and glittery. this maybe a result of the western society. girls get a pink pacifier and boys get a blue one. girls have to play with dolls dressed in ribbons and glitter boys with cars. this might be the reason why kitsch is such a feminin thing. it is a paradise, a dream, a sentimental thing. i remember having tons of toys (yes, i was spoiled) with the most girly shapes and crazy colours. maybe i feel nostalgic when i’m confronted with the kitsch-clichés of glitter and gold.

polly pocket mermaids, with alot of glitter wich made me buy it when i was 10.

this doll is also a ‘cupcake’ ! i had her tearoom that was also a tart !

curly plastic

as i mentioned i’m shaping sheets in different kind of materials. i shaped metal, copper and impulsively putted a flame on the object so the metal started to look more liquid and ‘baroque’. as i burned the metal i burned a shape i made out of a plastic sheet. the reaction was very surprising to me, while i was burning the plastic i became al curly at the borders and liquid parts became wholes. the result was a very ‘rococo’-looking object. the ‘kitsch’-potential became clear when i sprayed some very artifical pearlshine on it. it had the look of an airbruched toy. i want to make jewelry with this material, based on the idea of kitsch with its ‘clichés’.

on the internet i found images of antics that also have this shimmer and shapes i like, most of them are related to the sea, wich is very much a characteristic of ‘kitsch’, certainly for this of the 19th century, when industrialisation starts and people are losing their bond with nature. to get close with nature again they take elements of nature close to them, in their homes. like an aquarium for example filled with anemones and exotic fishes. but also their decoration takes the shape of a shell or a fish. it is a little piece of nature for those who can’t afford a big cruise.
